ON THE HOMEFRONT
As the United States entered World War Two, many of the nation’s resources needed to be mobilized to bring the country on a war footing. To this, many of the citizens of the United States were asked to sacrifice for their country, whether it was enlistement in the armed forces, or to help out on the homefront by participating in industry or in the home.
Many volunteered in this effort, as the government ran many programs that even the youngest child to the oldest citizen could participate in. Victory gardens to scrap and rubber drives to help conserve valuable resources that could be then turned towards production of military supplies for the troops out in the field.
This is just meant to allow a glimpse into some of these activities that our nation, a nation at war were asked to do. The “Arsenal of Democracy” was brought together for these means.
If the fires of freedom and civil liberties burn low in other lands, they must be made brighter in our own. If in other lands the press and books and literature of all kinds are censored, we must redouble our efforts here to keep them free. If in other lands the eternal truths of the past are threatened by intolerance we must provide a safe place for their perpetuation.
